BRANCH COUNTY - Just 43 days after his arrest on second-degree criminal sexual conduct charges, a Coldwater man will return to prison.

Circuit Judge Bill O'Grady sentenced 59-year-old Charles Dee Odette to 5-22 years after he pleaded guilty to CSC second degree for molesting two young girls in the home where he stayed after parole.

Unable to speak, in a wheelchair, with an oxygen machine clanking away, Odette signaled his understanding of proceedings with a "thumbs up."

The mother of the two young girls faced him in Branch County Circuit Court on Monday. "You destroyed my kids' life. I hope you rot in hell," she said with angry tears.

Odette was on the state sex offender registry after his 1992 conviction for first-degree criminal sexual conduct in Calhoun County.

Odette praised the girls for coming forward in a letter to the court. He said he never did when he was molested as a child.

"I'm truly sorry for everything I have done to you and the family."

His case began when Michigan State Police traced thousands of child sexually abusive photos and videos he downloaded to his computer. During that investigation, the young girls came forward to tell police how the wheelchair-bound man fondled them while they all lived in Branch County in 2018 and 2019.

Odette received a concurrent sentence of 5-10 years for possession of child pornography.

Prosecutor Zack Stempien said, "Though he certainly has some health issues, we have an individual that is not safe to be outside the walls of the prison system. It is just a very scary thought to have something of this nature out in our society."

Should Odette ever obtain parole again, he is required to wear a GPS tether for life.

Branch County Jail administrators refused to accept Odette when arrested on the warrant on Aug. 11. Stempien and court staff set up an immediate arraignment. Magistrate Valerie White ordered him to be held under a $200,000 bond. Odette complained he was not receiving all his medications.

Unable to find a secure location outside of jail for Odette, public defender Matt Glaser, with Stempien's and the court's cooperation, expedited the case so Odette could return to the Michigan Department of Corrections as soon as possible.
