It certainly might concern Photronics, Inc. (NASDAQ:PLAB) shareholders to see the share price down 34% in just 30 days. While that's not great, the returns over five years have been decent. It's good to see the share price is up 56% in that time, better than its market return of 53%.

With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Over half a decade, Photronics managed to grow its earnings per share at 54% a year. This EPS growth is higher than the 9% average annual increase in the share price. So it seems the market isn't so enthusiastic about the stock these days. The reasonably low P/E ratio of 8.89 also suggests market apprehension.

You can see below how EPS has changed over time (discover the exact values by clicking on the image).

It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Photronics shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 5.9% over one year. However, the TSR over five years, coming in at 9% per year, is even more impressive. Potential buyers might understandably feel they've missed the opportunity, but it's always possible business is still firing on all cylinders.
