An Indiana man is accused of beating his 91-year-old mother to death with a sledgehammer so she wouldn't find out about the "bad stuff" he did, media outlets report.
Charles H. Trumble, 59, is charged with murder in the death of his mom on Sunday in Portage, a city in northwest Indiana, police say.
Charles Trumble called 911 to tell cops he killed his mom, Dixie L. Trumble, police said.
Trumble was lying on his back next to his mother when police arrived, The Times of Northwest Indiana reported. The woman had "obvious head trauma," police said.
An officer performing CPR on Dixie Trumble overheard her son admit to killing her, The Times of Northwest Indiana reported.
"My mom was a distinguished woman," the officer recalls Trumble saying, the newspaper reported. "I am about to be in trouble for some really bad stuff, and I killed her so she wouldn't be exposed to it."
Portage Police Chief Mike Candiano doesn't know what crimes Trumble may be referring to, the Chicago Tribune reported. He said the police department wasn't investigating Trumble before the murder charge, nor were any of the surrounding police departments that investigators contacted, the newspaper reported.
Trumble was in Portage County jail on a charge of first-degree murder.
