PHILADELPHIA-On Feb. 2, the NBA will announce the All-Star reserves for both the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference. The 2023 All-Star game takes place at Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City and the Philadelphia 76ers figure to have at least two players at the mid-season event.
Joel Embiid and James Harden, two of the top players in the league, figure to have their names called on Thursday night. Embiid is having one incredible season averaging 33.5 points and 10.1 rebounds as he continues to dominate while Harden is averaging 21.4 points and 11.0 assists to go along with 6.4 rebounds.
Embiid was expecting to be named a starter, but he was snubbed in that respect, so considering the fact that he felt disrespected, he joked that he might not even be named an All-Star at all.
"I don't know if I'm gonna be an All-Star," he laughed. "I don't know. You never know. Like I said the other day, I'm gonna use the disrespect so I would not be surprised if I don't make it. So we shall see. If I don't make it, it's whatever. If I do, it's a blessing every single year."
If Embiid does make it, which there's no reason why he wouldn't, this would mark the sixth straight time he would be named an All-Star. While this time around he won't be a starter, it's still an honor for him to earn that spot.
"Starters or not, I'm competitive so, obviously, you want to be the best and I feel like I put myself in a position to be up there and be the best," Embiid added. "It's disappointing, but that's not what matters. Like I keep saying, when we're right, I feel like we have an opportunity to accomplish something big. So that's where the focus is."
As for Harden, if he makes it, this would be his 11th consecutive All-Star appearance. The streak for him began in the 2012-13 season, his first with the Houston Rockets, as he has established himself as one of the best in the league.
"It means you're one of the best players in the league," said Harden. "I'm not gonna sit up here and say I should be an All-Star and make a case and nothing like that. My numbers show it. Our seed shows it. So it will be, I think, my 11th in a row. So obviously, it's always an honor. You never want to take that for granted. It means you're doing something right and you're making an impact on your team and on the game. So if my name is called, then great. If not, then just bigger and better goals for the season."
