Rui Hachimura gifts Steph Curry a bottle of custom wine before Japan preseason game

Rui gifts Steph a bottle of custom wine before Japan game originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington

As the Washington Wizards explored Japan for the past few days before Friday's preseason matchup, they made sure to soak up the culture of their host nation. One of the biggest tenets of Japanese culture is hospitality and warmth-and Washington made sure to demonstrate those values before tip-off against the Golden State Warriors.

Defending NBA Champion and Finals MVP Steph Curry greeted the crowd at center court first, thanking them for their support of the NBA on behalf of the Warriors. Wizards forward Rui Hachimura, who hails from Toyama, Japan, then took a moment to speak to the crowd in his native language.

Hachimura is arguably the most famous and sought-after NBA player in Japan from a media perspective. His presence drew hundreds of reporters and cameras from the moment wheels touched down in Tokyo a few days ago. The thunderous response from the crowd at the game to his speech followed suit.

After addressing the crowd, Hachimura gifted a bottle of his signature wine to Curry and the Warriors. It was a special gesture between competitors and drew cheers from the stands.

Hachimura launched the wine under his brand name 'Black Samurai' this summer. According to, "Cultivated in Napa Valley, the heart of California's wine country, Rui had his hands on each step of the production of his cabernet sauvignon blend, from harvesting the grapes to be used, all the way through to the design of the bottle's label."

Hachimura joins Kyle Kuzma as Wizards players who take a special interest in the wine industry. Though the Wizards lost 96-87 to the Warriors in their preseason bout on Sunday, Hachimura finished with a team-high 13 points and nine rebounds in 25 minutes. Washington takes on Golden State again at 1 a.m. on Sunday morning before heading back home.
