The Portland Timbers will need to wait a while before drafting a player during the 2021 MLS SuperDraft.

Entering the afternoon, Portland held the eighth-overall pick which was acquired in a trade with the Los Angeles Galaxy where the Timbers sent Jorge Villafaña.

Now, Portland has decided to trade that pick for $100,000 in General Allocation Money, $75,000 in 2021 General Allocation Money (GAM) and $25,000 in 2022 General Allocation Money (GAM), from Orlando City SC, which gives the Timbers greater cap flexibility to make more moves this offseason.

While the move seems pretty boring on paper, owner Merrit Paulson reassured the Timbers fanbase that more moves will happen this offseason: Moves that he's excited about.

Following the trade, Portland now holds the No. 43 and No. 70 selections in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft.

Trading Villafaña without reciving players in return shows the franchise expects the newly-acquired Claudio Bravo to step into a large playing role as soon as next season.

Portland acquired the 23-year old Argentine defender in December 2020 to a multi-year contract using Targeted Allocation Money (TAM). At the international level, Bravo has made eight appearances for Argentina's U-23 Men's National Team, helping them win the 2020 CONMEBOL Pre-Olympic Tournament.
