NBA rumors: Alvin Gentry hoped Kings wouldn't add 'interim' title

Report: Gentry hoped Kings wouldn't add 'interim' title originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

The Kings have a new head coach, but he reportedly wishes his title read a bit differently.

Sacramento officially fired Luke Walton on Sunday in his third season as the Kings' head coach. The franchise tabbed Alvin Gentry to take over but with an "interim" tag. That reportedly was against the wishes of the longtime coach.

The Athletic's Sam Amick reported Tuesday, citing sources, that Gentry "was hoping the Kings wouldn't put the 'interim' tag on his new role."

Doug Christie, who is in his first year on Sacramento's staff after being a Kings broadcaster for NBC Sports California, reportedly played a vital role according to Amick's sources. Kings owner Vivek Ranadive reportedly saw Christie as an option to replace Walton if the team couldn't come to terms with Gentry, and his presence provided leverage.

A handful of others in the Kings' front office, including general manager Monte McNair, were adamant on hiring Gentry.

The start to a new era in Sacramento is off to a rough start, too. Gentry admitted he felt he failed Walton, and the Kings blew a lead to the Philadelphia 76ers' backups and lost their first game under Gentry. They're just 6-12 so far this season.

It's still early, but the Kings have a lot to fix in Sacramento. And they can't waste any time.
