More than 70 San Antonio police officers in coronavirus quarantine, department says

Coronavirus numbers have surged within the San Antonio Police Department, according to new figures.

Fifty-six sworn officers within the police department have tested positive for coronavirus since March, according to a police spokesperson.

Many of those cases have occurred this month. There were just six officers who had tested positive for COVID-19 on May 29, KENS-TV reported.

Of the officers with coronavirus, 17 have recovered, police said. One officer is hospitalized, while the others are recovering at home, a spokesperson told McClatchy News in an e-mail.

Those who are positive for the virus aren't the only police officers unable to work in the city. Seventy-one officers are currently in quarantine and there are 151 total police personnel quarantined, the department said.

The San Antonio Police Department has 2,463 sworn officers, a spokesperson said.

Reasons for the police department's rise in coronavirus cases were not given, but the spike corresponds with a large increase in the city's overall numbers.

More than 10,000 people have tested positive for coronavirus in San Antonio's Bexar County, according to the health department.

As cases continue to surge throughout June, San Antonio set a record Saturday with 795 new cases, the city said.

San Antonio's hospitals are considered at a "high stress" level, according to Texas Public Radio. Just over a fourth of hospital beds were available as of Sunday, the news outlet reported.
