Washington (AFP) - Syrian opposition forces backed by a US-led coalition killed more than 20 Islamic State fighters and took several others prisoner Thursday, military officials said.

According to the coalition fighting IS in Syria and Iraq, a vetted Syrian opposition group known as the Maghawir al-Thawra detected the fighters early Thursday in an area controlled by pro-Syrian regime forces in southern Syria, in the Al-Tanf border region.

Supported by coalition forces, the Maghawir al-Thawra "quickly and professionally conducted an operation," the coalition said in a statement.

"This is the second time in less than a month that convoys of Daesh terrorists, fleeing the middle Euphrates River valley, transited through regime-controlled territory," the statement read, using an Arabic name for IS.

"Despite the presence of Russian-backed, pro-Syrian regime forces in the area, Daesh still finds ways to move freely through regime lines and pose a threat," coalition director of operations Brigadier General Jonathan Braga added.

The coalition did not give additional details on the captured fighters, saying only "a number of Daesh terrorists were detained in the engagement, including foreign terrorists."

The coalition says 98 percent of the territory once held by IS has now been recaptured.

The Maghawir al-Thawra have been fighting IS in the tri-border area of Iraq, Syria, and Jordan since 2015.

Would Israel Attack S-300 Air Defenses in Syria?

There is no shortage of reasons to be concerned about the entangled drama unfolding in Syria, as Russia maneuvers on a shifting landscape that could see Israel and Iran collide in a direct confrontation. Commentary in The Wall Street Journal on Monday urged caution on the part of Moscow, arguing that Russia has already nudged the regional arch-enemies closer to war. A recent Israeli strike on a base in Syria which killed seven Iranians, including four Quds Force officers, might have been swept under the rug by Iran, according to the author Dennis Ross, but Russia's decision to call out Israel for the strike has forced Iran's hand, increasing the likelihood of retaliation to save face.

Israel's Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman said Tuesday that his country would attack Russian S-300 air defence systems in Syria if they were used against Israeli targets. "What's important to us is that the defensive weapons the Russians are giving Syria won't be used against us," Lieberman told the news website Ynet. Russia and Syria signed an accord in 2010 for the S-300 system but the missiles have not been delivered because of Israeli pressure, according to Kommersant.
