Phoenix police have identified a man officers shot and killed on Tuesday as 34-year-old Enrique Alcarez.
Officers were in the area of Third Street and Southern Avenue about 11 p.m. when they saw a vehicle that matched the description of a car involved in an armed robbery earlier that day. Officers tried to stop Alcarez, who continued driving away until the car crashed into a metal fence near 16th Street and Southern Avenue, police said.
Police said Alcarez displayed a firearm when ordered to show his hands, leading officers to shoot him multiple times. Police said one of Alcarez's gunshot wounds was self-inflicted.
Officers said they used a "less-lethal tool" to have the man show his hands, and when he didn't respond, they approached the vehicle and found a gun inside.
Alcarez was pronounced dead at the scene and a woman who was in the passenger seat - and who remained unidentified - was detained, police said.
Police did not release further information.
