Cubs' Kris Bryant got fake 'Welcome to the Mets' text in offseason

Kris Bryant was a fixture of trade rumors this past offseason, and at one point, those rumors took a strange turn for the Cubs third baseman.

Back in January, a report stated Bryant could be dealt "as soon as this weekend." Soon after, an unknown person took the opportunity to send Bryant a rather alarming text message.

"I got a text that weekend: 'Welcome to the Mets,'" Bryant told reporters on Wednesday.

Bryant said the message came from a phone number with a Connecticut area code, which obviously isn't too far from New York. The text led him to contact his agent, Scott Boras, who called the Cubs asking for clarification.

The Cubs shot down the rumor, which clearly turned out to be false, saying nothing was going on. Cubs spring training is underway, and their star third baseman is still with the team.

Bryant said Wednesday he's had good communication with team president Jed Hoyer, who's been open about what is and isn't true as it pertains to rumors. Hoyer said recently he tries to be honest with players when they reach out about rumors. Bryant's anecdote serves as one example.

"That's the kind of stuff that I feel like is nice to know, when there's something that's completely false," Bryant said. "At the end of the day, we are all human. And sometimes when you get a text that says something like that, it's like, well, that might kind of mess with me a little bit."
