Astros slugger Alex Bregman broke finger in World Series clincher: 'It's a good thing we won'

HOUSTON - Alex Bregman and Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker are certainly happy they closed out the World Series in six games against the Philadelphia Phillies.

If the Phillies had forced a Game 7 on Sunday, Bregman would have been unavailable.

After the 4-1 win at Minute Maid Park, Bregman says he broke his left index finger in the eighth inning trying to stretch a single into a double.

"I can barely think, because I got a broken finger," says Bregman amid the clubhouse champagne celebration. "It's a good thing we won."

Bregman finished the game at third base, but his absence in a Game 7 would have been problematic for the Astros. The Astros were already without the services of first baseman Yuli Gurriel, who was replaced on the active roster Saturday because of a knee injury he suffered in Game 5.

Bregman had a solid postseason hitting .294 with three home runs and 11 RBI in 13 postseason games. In the World Series, he had three doubles, four walks and drove in four runs.
